Roots Italian Kitchen recently opened at 212 S Federal Highway, and has been impressing diners with its fresh, natural and homemade-from-scratch Italian dishes ever since.

Owners Yuriy Kouzenkov and Mike Latimore’s (Chef Mike) vision was to create a restaurant where they could express their passion for authentically fresh Italian food, paired with five-star hospitality and service.

This passion is evident everywhere at this small, family-owned, restaurant - especially in the food. Roots Cafe & Kitchen takes pride in making their own ingredients, homemade-from-scratch daily. The result is the freshest Mozzarellas, Burratas, and Gnocchi - made from all natural Yukon Gold potatoes. Not to mention their paste and flavor additive free sauces - fresh Tomato Pomodora, Marinara, Marinara Fri Diavolo, Pesto and Creamy Alfredo - which top off their dishes deliciously.

Chef Mike honed his culinary skills from an early age. He was twelve years old when his brother-in-law opened an Italian restaurant and he became hooked. Learning from old school Italian chefs at a young age inspired his passion and drive to perfect flavors and infuse them into his dishes, and taking the time to do so. “Timing is everything and if you rush the process, your product will reflect that. Each and every dish on our menu, will reflect the time, passion and love that has been put into it. The main purpose of Roots is to showcase traditional northern Italian dishes with a modern and fresh twist to each dish.” says Chef Mike.

Menu highlights include the Gnocchi, which at Roots, isn’t heavy. The Gnocchi here is light and fluffy. The texture will remind you of childhood marshmallows - wow. Plus, customers can choose the type of sauce to accompany it. Another must have is the Florida Snapper alla Marechiaro, an artistic masterpiece. It features 6 oz of red snapper, jumbo mussels and clams on a bed of sautéed spinach, topped with a slightly spicy marinara sauce.

If you have trouble deciding what to order, try one of the owner’s favorites. Yuriy’s choice would be the Shrimp Fra Diavolo, and Chef Mike will be adding his two favorites - Penne a la Vodka and Snapper Oregenato – to the dinner menu shortly.

Now, make sure you save room for dessert, as they are also all made in house. A customer favorite is the double layered Sour Cream and Cream Cheese Cheesecake. It’s creamy with a light texture, making it a great way to finish a meal.

All these mouth watering dishes, savory desserts and smart wine selections come with a casual but warm atmosphere. The white tables and chairs, and white washed floors offer a welcome departure from some more typical Italian restaurant decor. The space is airy and bright, with an almost communal feeling, like you are enjoying a great meal at a dinner party at someone’s house.
